Breaking the Ice on the Cannabis Conversation

Cannabis has had a negative reputation for many years, although many people think the reputation isn't deserved. There was a heavy smear campaign that depicted cannabis as a hard drug that made people act completely crazy. It has been proven that these allegations are false. In fact, there are a huge amount of medical benefits associated with the consumption of cannabis. Even though cannabis is scheduled as a hard drug at the federal level, the reality is that marijuana is not a dangerous drug. While there is absolutely a risk of an individual abusing marijuana, the inherent risks are not comparable to other illicit street drugs.

No one has ever died from consuming marijuana, as it is just about impossible to overdose using cannabis. The plant does not lower inhibitions and make inebriated in the same way that alcohol does. Tons of people are completely accepting of drinking alcohol, but at the same time look down on cannabis users. Based on the fact that marijuana is less harmful in just about every aspect, there should be some more understanding and acceptance when it comes to cannabis. At the same time, it can be a difficult endeavor telling family members that you use marijuana.

One of the most important things to think about when it comes to sharing this type of information is the fact that you don't have to. If you decide you want to partake in the consumption of cannabis, it truly is your business. If you are an adult, there is nothing wrong with partaking in cannabis. It is now legal in the vast majority of states, so there should be no issues if you are over the legal limit. At the same time, there is no doubt negative connotation that is associated with marijuana. If you decide you want to tell your family members that you are involved with cannabis, you may want to get prepared for the many questions you may be asked. You may be met with condemnation from your family, as lots of people consider marijuana users drug addicts. Your family members may also try to convince you that what you are doing is bad, but you should keep in mind it is a personal decision. One of the biggest reasons why people have such a bad outlook on cannabis is the fact that there was such a massive smear campaign.

Alcohol prohibition originated because alcohol was a better alternative to gasoline. Prohibition was a means for the oil industry to eradicate alcohol as a competition. The same tactic was used to smear marijuana, based on the fact that hemp was a major threat to the timber industry. Interestingly enough, the same man who is responsible for the prohibition of alcohol created the smear campaign against marijuana. The negative connotation people have with cannabis derives from this very smear campaign, which wasn't based on the actual psychoactive effects of the plant at all. It was purely for big business and monopolization of the timber industry. Not only is marijuana safe, but it is also a far better alternative to alcohol and prescription medication. Marijuana should be looked at in the same way that you would look at a falsely convicted criminal. The bad reputation the plant has gotten is not based in reality. Bringing up these facts can be a great way to convince your family that marijuana is not the demon it is made out to be. Prepare yourself and be ready for the backlash that may ensue. However, at the same time, make sure you realize you are an adult making your own decisions in life. If your family doesn't approve, you can always simply keep your consumption to yourself.
